Defensive Driving

Defensive Driving

You’ve probably been told to be a ‘defensive driver’ when you are out on the road.  Knowing the importance of being a defensive driver and actually taking the time to learn what this means are two different ball games.  It is important that you understand what being a defensive driver is and that you take time to practice defensive driving skills.

  1. Focus – The first skill for defensive driving is to make sure that you are always focused on driving while you are driving.  This means that you should not be reaching for food, changing your music, playing on your phone or doing anything else in your car that distracts you from the road.  Be focused on the road and on the cars and drivers around you.
  2. Watch – It is important that you watch the drivers around you while you are driving.  You should be checking your mirrors on a consistent basis.  You want to make sure that you know who is around you and where you can go if you get into a sticky situation.
  3. Be Independent – Make sure that you do not depend on other drivers to get out of your way, let you merge or follow the driving laws.  You should be able to fend for yourself while you are driving, this way you can be sure that you are going to keep yourself safe.
  4. Obey the Law – Drive the speed limit and make sure that you are abiding by posted and written traffic laws in the area.  Not only is this beneficial for your liability, but you can be sure that you are not the cause of an accident that is going to cause harm to you or cause harm to others.

Driving does not have to be a scary experience.  Make sure that you are responsible while you are driving and that you take your time learning about how you can be a better driver all together.
